To find materials for scented bath salts, check crafts stores or natural food stores for essential oils. Sold in small bottles, these powerful fragrant oils require only a few drops per recipe.
Both kosher salt and sea salt have a slightly coarse grain and are suitable for bath salts. Kosher salt can be found in the baking section of the supermarket, while sea salts are available at health food stores.
Epsom salts are sold in the skin care section of supermarkets, drug and discount stores.
Won't the bath salts stain the tub?

To color this quantity of salt without fading, try paste food coloring sold for cake decorating. Another alternative: powdered food color. Both products produce a stronger color that is more resistant to fading.
Because this product won't be consumed as food, there's no problem trying other packaging alternatives. While canning jars are attractive, they're not necessary; bath salts can be layered in small plastic tube bags or recycled glass jars.
However, standard canning jars offer one advantage: they can be vacuum sealed using a product such as a Foodsaver-brand food sealer to preserve fragrance and freshness. Use canning jars and vacuum sealing if you want to make this gift early for holiday giving.
How far in advance can I make this recipe?
During long storage, Bath Salts gifts may lose their scent, and colored salts may fade or change color. To refresh the scent before giving, open jars and add two or three additional drops of essential oil. If you're concerned about color change, simply omit that step from the recipe and give an uncolored version of this craft gift.
