downsize the measuring!
maybe convert it into halves or something..... it has a conversion chart to make life easier since the ingredients normally yeilds to 3 dozen cookies, which will never fit unless you buy a huge jar to fill! i plan on using this method instead... have to see if it works!
Question
I count 5+ cups of ingrediants. How do you fit that into a quart (4 cup)jar?
This One Gets Asked A Lot!
The secret to getting all the ingredients in the jar? Tamp, tamp, tamp!
First, the flour measure is SIFTED flour. This means that when you put the light, sifted flour into the jar, it will pack down into less space. Similarly, both the oatmeal and the brown sugar will compact after measurement if properly tamped into place.
I like to use the top of a meat tenderizer as a tamping device. It's a square, ridged hammer used for tenderizing meat, but the top surface is heavy and smooth.
Use it to tap each layer of ingredients tightly into the jar. Between sifting flour, tamping, and the half-cup or so of "head space" put into every quart jar, the recipe will fit just fine.
Just ask me--I've made this one for years and it always fits.

disappointed.
I just bought enough for 6 jars, including the jars, and there is no way I am getting all of that flour in at the end. I shoved everything down as far as possible. I am very disappointed.
Repeating: The Secret
Just repeating the secret to making this gift--which I've made myself and also made in bulk with young people--is to follow directions carefully.
SIFT the flour before you measure it. This step is vital: sifting creates a light, airy measure that WILL tamp down to a much smaller volume.
Similarly, tamp each layer as you add it, particularly the brown sugar and oatmeal. I find it's helpful to tap the jar on the counter to settle the oats, then tamp them once they're level.
You can do it!

can't use sifted - but got it all in!
I tried the recipe with sifted, and the cookies didn't set right - there wasn't enough flour (the sifted amount is much less than what it calls for). However, I tried it again, and used my husband to mash it all down - it worked! DONT sift or change the recipe, but if you mash it all (we used the end of a whisk, and a advil bottle) after each layer (not the chips!) you will get it. So I'm no longer disappointed! Thanks!
